Abstract

Autonomy support, which has well-documented benefits for children, is teachable. Adults who received an autonomy support orientation were more autonomy-supportive in their interactions with children than were adults who received a “natural style” orientation. Multilevel modeling revealed that some variability in autonomy-supportiveness was also due to individual adult characteristics.
