Abstract

Participants looked from a face to an object, and the face’s eyes would follow or look elsewhere. A negative potential resembling an N170 was elicited by this observed gaze shift. This was greater for congruent than incongruent gaze. We conclude that this reflects the detection of successful joint attention initiation.
