Abstract

People hesitate to offer help when the need for help is unclear (Wilson, 1980). This study found that even under such condition, compassionate goals predicted greater intention to help a stranger. In contrast, self-image goals (i.e., the goals to appear supportive) predicted helping intention only when the need was clear.
