Wanting to Appear Supportive Does Not Predict Helping When the Need of Help Is Unclear

Abstract
People hesitate to offer help when the need for help is unclear (Wilson, 1980). This study found that even under such condition, compassionate goals predicted greater intention to help a stranger. In contrast, self-image goals (i.e., the goals to appear supportive) predicted helping intention only when the need was clear.
