Abstract
Two experiments reveal involuntary stimulus-elicited insights (e.g., WAX + FLAME = insight of “candle”), syntactic processing (reading of nonsense symbols), and judgments of nonsensicality (e.g., “green sun”). Evidence illuminates some determinants of these thoughts, including primacy effects. The findings illuminate how both thoughts and percepts of reality can arise involuntarily.
