Abstract
Mock jurors read a case summary in which an individual with or without schizophrenia falsely confessed to murder, was exonerated, and is suing for damages. Unexpectedly, responsibility judgments and punitive damage awards were unaffected by the exoneree’s mental health status—even if he displayed psychotic symptoms while police interrogated him.
