Abstract

A study of 171 LGBT people described facing discrimination when disclosing sexual orientation. A subsample of 163 participants responded to open-ended questions, reporting negative reactions. Results suggest people avoid coming out when the situation indicates danger; the decision to disclose appears to be based upon external rather than internal conditions.
