Abstract

Fifty-one college students reported on two work projects important to them. Prosocial purpose was associated with student commitment to these projects. Students high in prosocial purpose relied on inspirational ideas and deferred rewards (long-term goals, self-improvement) to motivate them in hard moments rather than immediate relief strategies (snacks, breaks).
