Abstract

We tested the hypothesis that heightened economic inequality would increase political polarization. Perceptions of inequality as high or low were manipulated, and desire for social distance from those with opposing political beliefs was measured. Perceiving inequality as high led to an increased desire for social distance, but only among liberals.
