Abstract

The development of implicit evaluative learning is examined. Children (7-11 years) and adults learned equally from statements signaling stimulus pairings (“X will be paired with pleasant”); only adults learned from actual stimulus pairings. Seemingly low-level associative learning may require later-developing inferences about categories, valence, and stimulus relations.
