Abstract
Major theorists on cognitive consistency have claimed that inconsistency always elicits negative affect. However, a recent theory has disputed this view (Kruglanski et al., 2018). Informed by the new framework, we present an experiment showing that need for closure—the epistemic desire for certainty—can moderate affective reactions to inconsistency.
