Abstract

We examine perceived meaning of suspect statements in a police supervised call by an alleged victim attempting to elicit an apology from a sexual molestation suspect. Explicitness of suspects’ apologies predicted perceptions of whether suspects admitted to the crime (despite recognized coercion by the caller), which predicted perceived guilt.
