Abstract

When people believe they are highly knowledgeable on a controversial issue, they are likely to approach conversations with disagreeing others more competitively and less cooperatively. When participants were led to believe that their conversation partner was high (vs. low) in issue knowledge, participants became less competitive and more cooperative.
