Abstract

While luxury consumption yields status benefits, it can also make consumers feel inauthentic. This is due to the perceived dominance of extrinsic motivation over intrinsic motivation for consuming luxury. This phenomenon is pronounced among consumers with low levels of psychological entitlement and moderated by the perceived malleability of cultural capital.
