Abstract

52 mothers' emotion socialization was coded during conversations with 6 year-old children. Children's emotion expression and regulation were coded in an individual frustration task. Mothers' praise and sympathy statements predicted boys' positive affect and self-regulation behavior, but not girls'. Sex differences in the socialization of emotion will be discussed.
