Abstract
Although social support is broadly associated with improved mental and physical health, close others in acute care settings may increase patient anxiety. We found patients perceived greater threat when close others were present during emergency department evaluation for acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which predicted ACS-related posttraumatic stress one month later.
