Abstract

This study investigated the effects of social groups (family, friends, and educators) and self-motivational beliefs on major selection and persistence of first-year college students (N=187). Results indicated only family and friends had a significant effect on students’ STEM interest and outcome expectations, which influenced their decision to major in STEM.
