Critical Thinking and Advertising: How Products Are Sold

Abstract

We studied the role of critical thinking in evaluating television commercials. Subjects rated 15 commercials that varied on how much they emphasized logical or emotional arguments. Those who either reported or demonstrated critical thinking tendencies did not differ from noncritical thinkers in their evaluation of the persuasiveness of commercials.
