Abstract

Why do individuals pay costs to intervene in conflicts that do not affect them? In two studies using vignettes and economic games (N =849), we show that observers are equally dissuaded from mistreating third-party punishers as they are second-party punishers providing additional evidence for the deterrence model of third-party intervention.
