Abstract

Binary information is prevalent in the environment. Our study examined how people represent alternations and repetitions in binary sequences. Using four paradigms (number estimation, memory recall, change detection, and visual search), we showed a consistent under-representation of alternations, compared to repetitions, revealing a perceptual limitation in processing binary information.
