Abstract

Transgender Americans face pervasive discrimination and prejudicial attitudes. We examine the component of stereotypes, or myths, in anti-transgender attitudes. The present findings suggest that anti-transgender prejudice may be informed by myths, especially the perception that transgender people are mentally ill. We discuss implications of the role of myths in policy-making.
