Scientists who study science policy, the scientific research enterprise, or the connections between the two should know about a new funding opportunity that is being offered jointly by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Called “A Science of Science Policy Approach to Analyzing and Innovating the Biomedical Research Enterprise,” this unique funding opportunity will provide awards of up to $250,000 annually. Applications are due May 8, 2019.

Funding is offered by the NSF Social, Behavioral, & Economic Sciences Directorate (SBE) Science of Science and Innovation Policy Program (SciSIP) and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). SBE is especially involved given the important contributions that scientists from the behavioral sciences can provide toward understanding how behavioral and social factors affect the research enterprise.

“NIGMS and SBE are partnering to enable collaboration in research between the SciSIP program and NIGMS. This partnership will result in a portfolio of high quality research to provide scientific analysis of important aspects of the biomedical research enterprise and efforts to foster a diverse, innovative, productive and efficient scientific workforce, from which future scientific leaders will emerge,” says the NSF program solicitation.

According to the solicitation, this new endeavor will fund the development of models, analytical tools, data, and metrics that can inform science policy and the development of the scientific enterprise.

NSF and NIH intend to award 4-8 awards annually, with award sizes ranging from $100,000 to $250,000 per year up to 4 years. APS recommends that scientists discuss this opportunity with program officers Cassidy Sugimoto (NSF; [email protected]) or Dorit Zuk (NIH; [email protected]) prior to applying.

Applications to this opportunity are due May 8, 2019, and then in the months of September and February thereafter.
