NSF Seeks New Director for Behavioral and Social Science Programs
The National Science Foundation’s is initiating a national search for the Assistant Director for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE), Myron Gutmann has served in this position, with distinction, since November 2009. The Assistant Director, SBE, manages a Directorate comprising the division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (BCS), the division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES), the SBE Office of Multidisciplinary Activities (SMA), and the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES).

Policy Fellowships: Society for Research in Child Development
The Society for Research in Child Development, SRCD, is seeking applications for upcoming Policy Fellowships for 2013-2014. There are two types of Fellowships: Congressional and Executive Branch. Both provide Fellows with exciting opportunities to come to Washington, DC and use their research skills in child development outside of the academic setting to inform public policy. Fellows work as resident scholars within their federal agency or Congressional office placements. Deadline to apply: December 15, 2012 Fellowships are full-time immersion experiences and run from September 1st through August 31st.

Music Makes a Brighter Future
Learning to play an instrument might lead us to feel more optimistic and motivated to seek opportunities, Michael M. Roy, Elizabethtown College, reported at the 24th APS Annual Convention in Chicago. In the spring of 2009, Roy and his colleagues established a fully functional concert band program in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. They returned in the fall of 2011 to assess the music program’s impact. During their initial and return visits, they measured feelings of self-esteem, optimism, positive affect, negative affect, motivation to avoid losses, and motivation to seek gains.

Changing Our Environment Can Change Our Diets
October 26, 2012 - Understanding nutrition doesn’t guarantee that we will develop healthy eating habits, says Brian Wansink of Cornell University. In this video from the Office of Behavioral and Social Science Research (OBSSR) at the National Institutes of Health, Wansink explains that our environment has a profound influence on how we eat. The lighting in the place where we’re eating, the amounts the people around us are eating, and the size of the serving spoons used to put food on our plates are all factors that influence our diets.
