Contextualizing Emotion Regulation Variability
Emotion regulation variability is related to flexibility and is thus assumed to be inherently adaptive. This symposium challenges this view by presenting a novel conceptual framework alongside empirical research showing how tactic-level mechanisms and cultural and social factors shape when variability supports emotion regulation – and when it does not.
