Although collectivism is widespread outside the modern West, it takes divergent regional forms. This symposium examines collectivism’s global origins and its local adaptations: Balliet models the evolution of collectivism; Kitayama theorizes on ecological divergence; Thalmayer explores the specific contours ofcollectivism in Sub-Saharan Africa as self-promotive interdependence.
