Culture Shapes Emotion, but Not How People Think It Does

It is uncontroversial that culture influences people’s emotions. But four talks suggest the patterns are often flipped from people’s expectations. For example, people predict that collectivistic cultures and low-SES people emphasize positive emotions in relationships more, but results show the opposite. These studies suggest updating theories of culture and emotion.
