Friendships and Ethnic Studies Classes As Contexts for Developing Critical Consciousness

Abstract

We investigated the interplay between friend group diversity, ethnic-racial identity (ERI), and critical action across 3 timepoints (N=563 9th graders). ERI achievement prospectively predicted critical action; higher friend group diversity and critical action prospectively and bidirectionally predicted each other. Diverse friend groups may encourage awareness of racism, prompting action.
