Abstract
This research investigated psychological determinants of recycling. A waste-sorting experiment demonstrated that household items varied in how often they were sorted correctly and how participants perceived their decisions, implying that cognitive effort may be a barrier. Autonomous, but not controlled, motivation was related to better performance and greater decision confidence.
