Abstract

The impact of relevance on the truth effect was investigated using non-polarizing science headlines. Relevance increased rated headline familiarity and accuracy, and interacted with repetition, sequencing of differing headline versions, and strength of alignment with participants’ views. Each of these factors mediates the truth effect in isolation and in combination.
