Abstract

Can anthropomorphic AI chatbots strengthen conservatives’ belief in a sexist stereotype? Two preregistered experiments (N=2,065) demonstrate this effect among conservative women, mediated by perceived anthropomorphism and trustworthiness, and rule out a competing explanation. Our research suggests roles of political ideology and social identity threat in AI’s influence on stereotype beliefs.
