Unraveling the Brain Mechanisms of Earworms

Earworms are spontaneous, involuntary musical loops whose neural basis remains elusive. Using a novel fMRI paradigm, we found increased right auditory dorsal stream activity and stronger coupling between this system and the precuneus during earworms, showing coordinated engagement of auditory circuits and the default mode network during spontaneous musical imagery.
