Abstract
Across three studies, we find that the more a lay relationship normatively serves the care function, the more appropriate and frequent emotion expression and perception are, whereas the reverse holds for the transaction function. Emotions appear to facilitate care but hinder transaction, with this functional alignment predicting appropriateness and frequency.
