Older Adults Exhibit No Negative Recency Bias on Rule Inference Processes Under Uncertainty Compared to Younger Adults

Young and middle-aged adults have shown systematic avoidance of recently used rules in a modified card-sorting task, suggesting an alternation bias in rule inference under uncertainty. This bias was not observed in older adults, indicating that processes underlying strategic rule inference, such as rule inhibition, change across the life span.
