Abstract

We investigated how semantic competition affects creative problem solving using the Remote Associates Test (N=58) with EEG. High-competition problems impaired performance and produced later forgetting of competitor items. Increased theta power during problem solving and recognition reflects inhibitory control resolving interference and subsequent reactivation of competing representations.
