Abstract

137 adults rated the truthfulness of different speakers. We compared standardness, stereotyping, and fluency models of accent bias. Accent standardness best predicted evaluations. Unexpectedly, non-standard accents increased perceived truthfulness, an effect mediated by higher warmth. Results reveal a context-specific credibility advantage for non-standard speakers.
