Awareness of Shared Reality with Competitors Facilitates Fairness

Across two studies (N=354), we provided causal evidence that awareness of shared reality with rivals (i.e., commonality of inner states about the world) enhanced willingness to compete fairly, controlling for closeness, familiarity, valence, and competitive motivation. We introduced a novel perspective on competitor relationships that helps cultivate fairness.
