Understanding Vulnerability and Self-Regulation In Early Childhood: A Mixed-Methods Examination of Risk, Resilience, and Supportive Practices

Abstract
We examined both cumulative and specific vulnerabilities in relation to young children’s self-regulation using NSCH 2023 data (n = 12,055) and teacher interviews. Cumulative vulnerability uniquely predicted poorer self-regulation (β = .311), highlighting added risk captured by multiple adversities. Teachers identified hidden vulnerabilities and used tailored strategies to support regulation.
