Abstract

Across two preregistered experiments, we tested whether occupational heroism can be shifted by framing workers as exposed to risk, selfless, or helpful. Risk increased heroism most reliably, while being helpful mattered more than selflessness. Simple narrative frames substantially increased or decreased heroic perceptions across both heroic and non-heroic occupations.
