Abstract
We examined whether outcome alternation biases causal inference. Across two experiments, higher alternation reduced perceived efficacy when participants rated drug effectiveness after viewing sequences of recovery/no recovery outcomes. Local sequence structure could play a role in the development of empirically unsupported beliefs, such as those related with pseudoscience.
