Abstract
We investigated how passion- versus ability-based career choices shape job satisfaction over time. Tracking 371 graduates for eight years, we found passion-based careers peaked early but declined, whereas ability-based careers steadily improved. Person–Environment fit mechanisms explained this divergence. Findings challenge popular advice and illuminate how early choices shape long-term fulfillment.
