Abstract
When stigmatized labels are replaced, it’s assumed that the terms are interchangeable and that stigma reduction stems from wording alone. However, if a recommended label signals a distinct social group, reduced stigma may reflect differences in perceived group membership. This study tests whether “interchangeable” labels evoke the same reference group.
