Abstract
This study examines the mediating effect of emotion and effortful control on the relations between early contextual risk and later psychopathology. Participants included 306 mothers and their children. Preschool risk predicted lower effortful control, which in turn predicted pre-adolescent internalizing and externalizing, above the effects of contextual risk and parenting.
