Abstract
Visual word recognition suffers when line junctions (vertices) are removed. Four experiments using naming, lexical decision, and masked priming revealed smaller vertex effects for pseudowords than words, unaffected by word frequency. These findings suggest vertices serve a repurposed functional role in reading rather than a vestigial remnant of object recognition.
