Abstract

This study investigated whether and how orthography influences spoken word production. Adults with varying literacy levels performed an object naming task manipulating orthographic consistency and phonological neighborhood of object names. Results showed that orthographic knowledge is automatically activated to assist lexical selection as soon as rudimentary reading skills are acquired.
