Abstract

We investigated how AI tutors' sociability and agency shape learning in a 2×2 experiment. Sociability improved retention, agency enhanced learning transfer, but combining both features impaired transfer. This suggests that anthropomorphic design in AI tutors is not uniformly beneficial; instead, its effectiveness depends on alignment with specific learning goals.
