Effort Norms Encourage More Exertion but Not Less

Abstract
Do high and low-effort norms impact effort willingness symmetrically? Across twelve studies, we found that high-effort norms increased effort willingness, compared to a control group who received no social information. While participants exposed to low-effort norms did not exert less effort, and in fact increased effort willingness.
