Stop Scrolling! Focused Attention Improves Social Media Engagement Experiences

Abstract
Participants viewed Instagram content under varying levels of selection agency and focused attention. High focused attention reliably improved experiences—reducing boredom, increasing interest and enjoyment, and enhancing memory—whereas selection agency had minimal effects. Overall, focused attention, not choice, produced higher-quality social media experiences despite interfaces encouraging rapid, endless scrolling.
