Abstract
Participants watched a scene showing a theft either while recording it on a smartphone or simply observing. Those who recorded the event remembered fewer correct details about the theft and the thief, whereas their memory for peripheral, non-crime details was unchanged. Smartphone recording selectively impaired memory for key crime information.
