Abstract
This research examines how higher-level managers’ trust in employees, as perceived by direct managers, reduces abusive supervision. Using a multi-source, multi-wave field study, we show that direct managers’ beliefs about how much higher-level managers trust their team members (i.e., third-party trust metaperceptions) serve as a critical mechanism constraining supervisory misconduct.
