Abstract

We examined how emotion regulation skills predict symptom improvement in borderline personality disorder (BPD) in cognitive-behavior therapy (N = 97). Greater within-person effectiveness in skill use predicted session-to-session BPD symptom reductions, whereas higher overall frequency reflected greater distress. Findings highlight skill effectiveness as a key mechanism of BPD treatment improvement.
