AI Everywhere, Literacy Nowhere: The Need for Generative AI Education

Abstract
Incoming college students (n=3,709) demonstrated low generative AI literacy, averaging only 63% correct on the Generative AI Literacy Assessment Test. Negligible knowledge gaps emerged across sub-groups (e.g., gender, major), emphasizing the need for institution-wide, rather than targeted, AI literacy education to prepare students for an increasingly AI-integrated academic environment.
